St. Clair R-XIII SD recently held several creative Community Engagement Forums, where participants were given $12M to spend on the priorities they felt are most important for the District. The BOE will consider placing a $12M zero tax increase referendum on the April 2020 ballot. The community has remained focused on Safety, Site Circulation, Performing Arts and Renovation of Existing Classroom Spaces. BACK IN THE DAY...
“In 1983, S. M. Wilson moved a crew to a project in Paducah, KY, adding two additional floors to the top of an existing six-floor hospital.”
S. M. Wilson & Co. joined into a joint venture with Ray Black & Sons of Paducah, KY, and began working on Lourdes Hospital. This $36 million project entailed removing the existing mechanical penthouse on top of the hospital, tearing off the roof, and adding two floors. As part of the process, the mechanical penthouse included the elevators, which had to be extended to reach the new seventh and eighth floors.
“At the time, we had a company plane and we used it to take aerial job site photos. We didn’t have drones back then.”
The Lourdes Hospital project also included expanding the basement and building a first floor on top of it. The company’s American 9299 crawler crane was brought down from Springfield and used to bring all the construction materials to the roof during the project. Everything needed or used for this project was hoisted by the crane or carried up the stairs from the 6th floor. One of the more challenging aspects of this job was that the crane operator couldn’t see anything he was hoisting. He was completely reliant on the 2-way radio operator for direction.
“Back in the 80s, everything was different from today. What I remember about jobs back then was that even though they were very hard, they were fun too. We had so many Wilson people working on that job. Many had just finished working on another large Wilson project in Springfield, IL, the Willard Ice Building, which was a $55 million project, and then relocated to Paducah,” Williams said. “I was finishing my apprenticeship, and after two years, I was pushed forward because I was learning more in the field by doing hands-on work than in a classroom. My dad was the superintendent on the Paducah job, so I was excited to be working on that job with him, too.”
In 1983, Williams moved to Paducah with his wife and young daughter. After 2 ½ years, when the project was completed, he and his family moved back to Mt. Vernon, IL, and he became a traveling superintendent for the company. He has served in this role for 36 years and has been with the company since February 1981. #SMWBeyondTheBuild #BackInTheDay
